Artist's Comments
The term "siren song" refers to an appeal that is hard to resist but that, if heeded, will lead to a bad result. Later writers have inferred that the Sirens were anthropophagous (cannibals), based on Circe's description of them "lolling there in their meadow, round them heaps of corpses rotting away, rags of skin shriveling on their bones."[5]
Im not sure which one is the darker creature. But i wanted to doodle off something that showed both siren/mermaids sides. The blatant bog witch, a more serpentine primal creature that could possibly represent a more spiritual nature element. Then later on, the more refined seductress- singing out a cry to sink seamen and appear in cutesy Disney movies under the guise of innocents. According to Dorothy Dinnerstein’s book, The Mermaid and the Minotaur, human-animal hybrids such as the minotaur and the mermaid convey the emergent understanding of the ancients that human beings were both one with and different from animals and that, as such, humans' "nature is internally inconsistent, that our continuities with, and our differences from, the earth's other animals are mysterious and profound; and in these continuities, and these differences, lie both a sense of strangeness on earth and the possible key to a way of feeling at home here".
