Art is so important. Then again, it depends on what school you go to. My school had a horrid art system.

Oh yes, and this includes music, too. It should be as (and probably) more important than the emphasis on school sports. Art encourages people in so many different ways.

my money comes from it. I was not so brilliant as a student of computer science... i preferred history, art, and all the afternoon courses... like journalism, video-making... and now.. i am a webdesigner... 5 years in the same team!

Student here, been in several art schools actually. Drawing, painting and now photography.
Don't think it is very relevant to have art in school, unless it is a specific *art* school.
Speaking of cognitive, you make a shitload of typos. But who am I to judge? I do the same when I'm tired XD

I'll say vital, I guess... but I think it's more "important" than necessary, more of a "the option should exist for the students who wish to pursue it"

I watch the stars as they fall from the sky.
I held a fallen star and it wept for me, dying.
I feel the fallen stars encircle me, now as they cry.

Parent here, I push Arts, Spelling, and Writing as main focus for my son. Math and Science are the lesser areas. I am a history buff so he will pick that up from me.

Art because Imagination is key to enjoying life.

Spelling and writing effectively and properly, as they are important no matter what you do in life if you want to be taken seriously.

I haven't taken any art (or in fact music) lessons since I was 14. And, to be honest, what we did do was pretty crap. Yes, I think its important to have it for the people who want to persue it, but if you do have it as an option, make sure its good.

Art (visual, performance, any) is important within the academic and cognitive development of children (and adults) because it asks for creativity and application of effort even if the level of natural skill is not comparable. Creativity relates to problem solving, the development of artistic skills (even minimally) provides another method of communicating ideas, and the collaboration of efforts usually seen in performance arts encourages cooperation. In addition, art can provide a place for those students not quite as academically gifted to succeed and thrive, developing the confidence to approach the challenges they face in the academic (and outside) world.

As you may have guessed, I am an avid supporter of art, and I believe it should be a required and valued part of curriculum through high school, even college, for all students not just those working towards a degree/career in art.
